WP Panel v1.9.0 is officially released.
This update focuses onsystem updates: the panel automatically refreshes the server software sources every day and checks whether there are packages that can be upgraded, so you no longer need to log in to the panel to trigger a check; whether to let the panel install updates automatically is controlled by a separate checkbox that is off by default.
Automatic daily checks with clear results
As long as the panel is running, it will automatically refresh the software source index once a day and check for upgradable packages, regardless of whether you access the dashboard and regardless of the „System Update Alert“ switch. The latest check time, result, number of updatable packages, and failure reason are all displayed in the „Settings → System Updates“ card.
- When the check is normal, it displays „Up to date“ or „Updates available (not auto-installed)“ along with the count;
- When the software sources are unreachable or refresh/read fails, it displays „Check failed“ and the reason, and will not disguise the failure as „Up to date“;
- Failed checks will be retried automatically at the next daily check, and you can also refresh manually at any time.
The „Refresh“ button now truly refreshes the software sources
In v1.8.0 and earlier versions, „Refresh“ only read the package list currently saved by the system and reused a cache of up to 5 minutes. If the software source index is old, the list you see may also be old.
Starting from v1.9.0, clicking „Refresh“ first updates the package index of the software sources, then re-reads the upgradable list, so what you see is the result currently provided by the software sources. „Refresh“ is still only a check and will not install any software; the automatic reading on the dashboard and when opening pages still uses a lightweight cache and will not request the software sources on every visit.
Auto-install: off by default, requires you to enable it
„Settings → System Updates“ adds a new„Automatically install system updates when available“switch. It is unchecked by default: the panel only checks and displays results every day and will not automatically install anything.
When checked, if the daily check finds updates, the panel will automatically execute exactly the same process as the manual „One-Click Update“, with all protections in place:
- Before installation, a complete upgrade simulation is performed; if the upgrade plan would remove any packages, it stops immediately without changing the server;
- The actual upgrade preserves your existing configuration files and will not automatically clean up packages;
- After the upgrade completes, it automatically checks the apt/dpkg status, the Nginx configuration, and whether Nginx, PHP-FPM, MariaDB, Redis, and the panel itself are running normally;
- Once the task starts, the final result is displayed in the System Updates card.
One thing to understand: enabling this switch is equivalent to authorizing the panel to installall routine system updatesprovided by the current software sources, which may include PHP, Nginx, the kernel, and more—not just security patches. Before enabling, confirm that you accept this scope; if you are unsure, keeping it off and updating manually is equally safe.
Will the server restart automatically?
No. Whether updates are automatic or manual, WP Panel will never restart your server automatically. If an update requires a restart to take effect, the panel will clearly indicate this, and when to restart is entirely up to you.
Automatic updates can also fail, and when they do, packages may already be partially upgraded. The panel does not provide one-click rollback, but the reason for the failure is displayed in the System Updates card, and the update is automatically retried during the next day„s daily check. This is exactly why we made automatic installation “off by default and enabled via a separate checkbox.„
Upgrade and compatibility
- The panel database schema is unchanged (remains
1.0.68), so installed servers can upgrade directly; - The daily automatic check is enabled automatically with the upgrade; the automatic installation switch is off by default, so no automatic installation occurs after upgrading;
- The installation script, website workloads, and the panel's own update process are not modified.
